Within the Giacometti Courtyard of the Fondation Maeght, where creative energy has pulsed for decades, French artist Woodkid performed a special concert ahead of the Cruise 2019 collection. The talented, multi-hyphenate musician sourced rare instruments conceived by brothers François et Bernard Baschet, whose compositions from the 1950s were dramatically conceptual in shape and sound. Their unconventional structures – elemental in design yet abstract – produce acoustics that, still today, resonate with modernity. Here, the effect was further heightened on a stage that reimagined Les Nuits de la Fondation Jean Stryjenski which took place at the Fondation Maeght in 1986. Such striking aesthetic and acoustics made for a memorable backdrop to Woodkid’s original soundtrack, which featured Jennifer Connelly speaking extracts from Grace Coddington’s memoir, Grace: A Memoir. As dusk settled on Saint-Paul-de-Vence, this inspired performance and installation connected past and present ahead of Nicolas Ghesquière’s vision of what is to come.
