Fondation Louis Vuitton launches the second phase of its inaugural program with an expansive exhibition by Olafur Eliasson, from 17 December 2014 to 16 February 2015.

Entitled Contact, Olafur Eliasson’s exhibition explores “the relations between self, space, and universe” by creating a cosmos within the Fondation.

Eliasson’s first solo show in France since his 2002 exhibition at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Contact envelops visitors in a choreography of moving light and shadows, seemingly transporting them into the darkness of outer space. A number of smaller optical devices distributed throughout specially built passageways continue the artist’s on-going investigations into the mechanisms of perception and the construction of space.

As Olafur Eliasson explains: “My exhibition addresses that which lies at the edge of our senses and knowledge, of our imagination and our expectations. It is about the horizon that divides, for each of us, the known from the unknown.”

    Chief Curator : Suzanne Pagé
Curators: Laurence Bossé and Hans Ulrich Obrist, in close cooperation with Claire Staebler, together with Olafur Eliasson and his studio.

  • Miami Design District - Pierre Paulin’s “Playing With Shapes”

Louis Vuitton unveils an unreleased modular furniture design created by Pierre Paulin in 1972 for Herman Miller.

Cultivating a tradition of innovation, Louis Vuitton participates in a residential project conceived in 1972 by Pierre Paulin for American furniture maker Herman Miller. This long-lost, one-of-a-kind project had never actually been realized.

This year, Louis Vuitton once again revisits functionality by realizing “Playing with Shapes”; a satellite exhibition for the Miami Design District during Art Basel Miami, held December 2nd - 7th.

One expects from a designer a practical object with, if possible, a touch of poetry and elegance”.

    - Pierre Paulin

Avant-garde designer Pierre Paulin anticipated the necessary alliance between a changing world, new techniques and a living space that was conceived as a refuge, or an intimate safe house. From 1969, Pierre Paulin had been in contact with Herman Miller, a furniture company founded by the De Pree family. The artist admired the family’s history, particularly the fact that they had produced works by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. Together, Paulin and the company planned to produce a range of original and revolutionary equipment for residential homes. The rest is history.

  • THE FONDATION LOUIS VUITTON OPENING

The Fondation Louis Vuitton opens its doors to the public as of today Monday, 27 October 2014.

The building, designed by architect Frank Gehry, will become a new location in Paris for contemporary French and international artistic creation. Resembling a cloud of glass, the building is set in the Jardin d’Acclimatation in Paris, in the northern part of the Bois de Boulogne.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton’s mission is to encourage and promote contemporary artistic creation both in France and internationally. The collections and programmes will continue the tradition of artistic and creative movements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton will be principally associated with artistic creation in all its forms. At the heart of the spaces, the public will be invited to discover the permanent collection made up of works belonging to the Fondation or the Arnault collection, as well as temporary exhibitions – two a year – and musical events in the auditorium.

Its terraces offer unique panoramic views of Paris and the lush greenery of the Jardin d’Acclimatation, the inspiration for Frank Gehry’s architecture of glass and transparency.
